Hi Everyone,
I'm a very happy owner with a Spectra V31 and have found lots of rings and even used it for a bit of prospecting in the Yukon.I was wondering if anyone had their settings for finding the loonies and twoonies found here in Ontario Canada. My old Spectrum XLT would find them like wildfire but it seems the Spectra V31 nees a bit more tweaking in that regard..Any tips would be appreceiated..cheers and happy hunting..looking forward to spring here in Canada!!..Bill

Australian Silver... (1 reply)

Howdy--

I finally had the chance to get out and swing the V3i. It's been over 2 weeks since my last hunt. That's waaay too long between hunts. I went back to that vacant lot where I dug the 1932 Texas Chauffeur License and several silver coins. Two large piles of dirt had recently been spread on this lot in preparation to make it a parking lot. GREAT...some new dirt to hunt! I was using my 6x10 coil and my first signal was a solid 85 VDI @ 4". I was really surprised to see this portion of a coin bracelet. The Australian coins are: 1943 3 Pence, 1942 6 Pence, 1943 Shilling and the heart was fashioned from a 1943 Florine. One side of the Florine had been smoothed and etched on it "44 New Guinea". I'm guessing that it was owned by a WW2 veteran who spent time there. My next finds were a 1937-D Merc, a couple Oklahoma "For Old Age" tax tokens, a play coin and a few wheat cents. My favorite find was my last signal of the day - a 1935 Texas Chauffeur License. That's the second Chauffeur License that I dug on this lot. It was a good day and great to get out swinging that coil again! Best of luck and...

Happy Hunting!

Is there a source here where you can see settings for the v3i , little tweaks to get the most out of the machines in certain situations and conditions? Reason i am asking , when i am out detecting i have my cell phone but it is hard on a cell phone to sort through hundreds of posts looking for someones setups. If it were in a nice neat thread where the readers could not post but only look for reference it would be incredibly helpful when using a cell phone while out detecting.

I found what looks like a rock. I need some help to determine what it might be. It is not lead as it is too light. It weights only 14.4 grams. It is NOT magnetic. The VDI is +80 (with 87% confidence) and the polar graph has all three frequencies in the upper right quadrant, so it should be something good. I suppose that there could be a coin completely encased in this rock-like material but it's hard to imagine given the apparent hardness of the material. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

on the V3i if you have a reading of a nickel with a probley rating of 90% and it shows two icons a nickel and a ring which icon is the most probley icon for the find the 1st one or the second one ?? the first one being the one on the left or first one that comes on the screen is that the most probable find or the second one on the right of the first one.
I hope you all understand what I am trying to say the Manual says the icon tells the most probable but when there is two what is the most probable one.??
thanks for the reply

White's VX3 - Settings for Utah? (2 replies)

So I have had this machine for a year and I really want to love this machine, but most times I take it out I am about ready to wrap it around a tree.

I am a real newbie to it.

I have read all that I can on this machines on this forum and others. Tried all that I read and learned The biggest problem is it false and chatters all the time and many times I end up digging empty holes because even though the VX3 said something was there it is not. I've tried different coils. I've tried just using factory setting as well. I always manual ground balance etc.

I feel like the biggest problem is that I can't nail the settings correctly. I usually hunt in Coin and Jewelry mode. How low can I take the RXGain and still get good depth? Or do I only lower the discrimination setting?

Or does it sound like White's needs to take a look at it?

Anyway hoping someone out there can help me with a few good "Utah" settings on this machine that will work. I would really appreciate it

(I'll fall back on my MXT All Pro in the meantime...... :) )

Thanks in advance!!!

Spent 2 1/2 days in Virginia relic hunting. The back of the property was too wet to hunt so the area was restricted to about a 100' x 500'. Still managed to pull up 46 bullets and the 1800 large cent.

I was using the new 13" Detech coil and was looking for a particular bullet...a .44 caliber Colt with extractor marks. I found 4 of these .44 caliber Colt bullets about 5 years ago. Then the fifth bullet about 3 years ago and finally the 6th one on this trip. The twisted tops are extraction marks. They were all found in the same 20 foot radius. It was deeper and eluded the 10DD and the 10x13SEF coils.

The 3 bullets on the left are Colt Army Early Model and the three on the right are Colt Army New Model. Either the soldier pulled all six out of one revolver or two revolvers were involved which could account for the different type of bullets (although both could be fired in the same revolver). I guess another theory is that a gunsmith was working on Colt revolvers in that general area.

.54 and .58 rifle muskets, .52 Sharps carbine, .54 Merrill's carbine, .50 Smith carbine, .44 Bartholow, .44 Colt, and .36 Colt. The bullet on the bottom left appears to have been fired with the ramrod in the barrel.

Hello all,
I have been a dfx user for ten years and am considering the v3i. Would like to hear from those of you who have been die hard dfxers that have switched over to the v3i. I am not concerned about the learning curve, I am more interested in the differences in depth between the two machines, and in the target identification. I have had great success with the dfx and do not like change. Please give me the pros and cons. Much obliged.

Pewter Eagle button (no replies)

Well 2 or 3 weeks ago or so, I went detecting with a few buddies of mine and found some lead bullets, mini balls, shell casings and my first eagle button. I was happy to find it, since this place has been hunted for probably 20-30 years by more detectors than Carter has liver pills. I was a little disappointed at first because it was a small one and not the larger type. Then Blind Squirrel told me that it was pewter and a one piece Infantry button that was fairly rare. He also told me that the button was probably 1820-1830 vintage. That really made me feel a lot better. It is worn, but not worn out, and is kind of hard to get a good picture of it, but this was as good as i could get.
The other items were found locally and are .925 silver. The two rings are birthstone rings and the tweety bird is sterling. These were found at local schools. It is really amazing how many gold and silver charms and rings I have found at the elementary schools.

I guess i really just wanted someone to help persuade me to purchase the v3i, even though i have been researching the machine for the past 6 months. Most of what I have read about it is positive. My future purchase of the v3i will be most likely be in April ( if I can wait). I am looking forward to passing on anything I learn about this machine as well as taking in all that is posted on this forum. Much obliged.

Ive never owned a whites v rated machine, and had a question.if I bought a v3x could I get it upgraded at anytime, and if so how much is the upgrade?..I have a Irish etrac now,but if it don't workout,I was wondering about the v3 upgrade,I see a few for sale. And one more question,is the v3i just as heavy as a etrac,or is it better balanced, for those of you that have both

Dear Whites....please add this feature to your next V3 upgrade... (no replies)

I would like the ability to ZOOM to a selected frequency's signagraph. And If I can't get the ability to 'select' the frequency that can be ZOOMed.. then I would like the ability to ZOOM to the 7.5 kHz graph. Or...When turning multigraph off, I would like the ability to select the freq that will be displayed in single graph mode. Either of these will fit my needs. I'm just suggesting options to make it easier to acomplish.

The color Spectragraph is the best thing since sliced bread. If you could add this feature it would be like putting jam on that bread.

I run my Spectragraph with one VDI number per bar and a zero threshold. Beautiful pictures. I see the VDI number stacks, and most importantly, I see the missing VDI number stacks. Foil is easy to id by the way it smears in 2.5 kHz. Tabs are easy to identify by their missing numbers in 7.5 kHz. In fact I have a new appreciation of the 7.5 to 8.5 kHz frequency range. This middle range is the fact checker for the higher and lower frequencies. I would sincerely like to be able to be able to do a quick switch to a single graph view of this range.

Currently turning multigraph off and selecting it for the analyze screen only gives me the dominate frequency. I really need to see the 7.5 kHz graph with the additional detail provided by the single graph view.

Thanks
Mike.

V3 Ground Filter Talk. (4 replies)

I haven't liked anything I've read about the V3 filters....The manual and the engineers have left this as a dark subject....So I have decided to turn the light on.

Ground filters are used to separate out and block the slower changing ground signal and pass the faster changing target signal. White’s engineers are using hertz to designate how fast a target signal needs to change in order to pass through the filter. They are measured in 'rate of change'.

In addition, they have provided two types of filters for each speed; a ‘Band Pass’ filter and a ‘High Pass’ filter.

A ‘Band Pass’ filter is exactly what it says it is. It will pass a certain signal “rate of change” that falls within or between the lower and upper ranges or boundaries that have been defined for that ‘band’. It will block all signals that fall below or above that Band’s range. It will pass ONLY the signals whose ‘rate of change’ falls inside the acceptance band. It is like using “Notch Accept” only instead of notching in a metal target’s phase response, you are notching in a particular signal “Rate of Change”.

A “High Pass” filter is different than the Band Pass filter the same way the notch feature is different from the discrimination feature. High Pass is like setting the Disc on your detector. Targets below the Disc Setting are blocked, targets above the Disc setting are reported. High Pass Filters block the signals whose ‘rate of change’ is less than the lower range defined for the filter and pass ALL signals whose ‘rate of change’ is above that range.

I would suggest that the upper end of all the available “Band Pass” filters are the same and that the filter speed selections allow you to raise or lower the lower limit of the Band Pass filter.

To say it another way, the Band Pass filter’s high limit is fixed. The filter speed selected moves the lower limit toward or away from that fixed upper limit.

I would suggest that a certain hertz High Pass filter and its related Band Pass filter share the same lower limit of the filter. The High Pass filter is only removing the upper limit of the Band Pass.

So…with the basics out of the way….let’s look at the filter selections…

5 kHz Band Pass = This filter is used for very low mineralized ground. Since there really isn’t a very big ground signal to block, this filter’s lower limit will allow very slow changing signals to pass. It has a high limit in place that a signal’s “rate of change” has to fall below. At this point…the mineralization effect of the ground does not significantly affect a target signal.

5 kHz High Pass = Same as the 5 kHz Band Pass except there is no upper limit.

7.5 kHz Band Pass = Now I’m starting to get some low to moderate ground response, more ground signal is received. At this point the ground signal is starting to have an effect on the target signal. This speed raises the lower limit of the Band Pass filter to compensate and requires a little faster “rate of change” from the target signal to report it as compared to the 5 kHz filter. It still has the same upper limit in place.

7.5 High Pass = Same as the 7.5 kHz Band Pass except there is no upper limit.

10 kHz Band Pass. = Now I’m into moderate to high ground mineralization. The ground response is significant. Surface irregularities can report as a metal target. The signal is degraded and weak signals are being masked by the ground signal. To compensate, this filter raises the lower limit even higher, requiring an even faster rate of change to pull the target signal out of the ground response.

10 kHz High Pass = Same as the 10 kHz Band Pass except there is no upper limit.

12 kHz Band Pass = High to very high ground mineralization. Weak signals are invisible and even moderaly deep signals will report as iron. Ground irregularities will report as metal targets. The target signal is highly degraded. This filter selection raises the lower limit to it’s maximum range to compensate. This is the narrowest Band Pass filter available.

12 kHz High Pass = Same as the 12 kHz Band Pass except there is no upper limit.

Next….How to select the right filter…….

Just curious what are most v3i users favorite coin programs and why? I ask because my mxt pro and now the MX sport seem to just simply find more coins for me. How can this be? Thanks for the input.

Had the day off so I went to a local Park to get some exercise. I don't skip large signals next to trees so I dug this one. A 22 caliber revolver with serial number across the but. Police Captain was happy to recover it and thanked me. He said it wasn't in the ground too long as he was able to rotate the cylinder with distinctive clicks. Although it looks abandoned I am still glad to get it off the streets.

I out on the 4x6 sniper coil today. I have comb this place with the d2,6x10 and now the 4x6 and still managed to squeak out some finds. I can't go to many days in a row because all the little bits of iron and big iron will drive a person batty. I did manage a 1860 I.H , 1928 Wheat, a small one piece button, a trappers tag, it has the name on it so i didn't show that side. The family owns a business here in town I'll go return it to them. And a big iron spike. You don't realize how sensitive the Vx3 is until dissecting your plug looking for a small button that you can't find right off the bat but your probe is screaming at you. Thanks for looking

I can't believe my luck, last week at work I started working with a guy I had worked with on and off before, but never more than 4 hours at a time. Well anyway half way through the week he asked me if I knew anything about this detector that was coming up at an estate sale, he knew I was into detecting. When he showed me the picture on his phone from the auction site I couldn't believe it, it was a V3i. I told him I thought it was Whites top of the line detector, and he got on ebay and confirmed it. Well I ended up going down to the auction site after work to check it out, I couldn't believe it when I saw it, there wasn't a mark on it! Whoever bought this detector never put it to the ground, it apparently just stood in the corner looking pretty. It had 2 rechargeable battery packs, 1 backup pack, charger, a Bullseye II pinpointer with the original 9 volt battery still in the cellophane wrapper, headphones (not wireless) and a soft carrying case. I checked it out to make sure it worked, but the last detector I bought was a late 90's Spectrum XLT so there was a little bit of a learning curve figuring it out. Well making this long story shorter I won the bidding and got this whole setup for $750.
I took it out yesterday in my front yard (use to be a hay field) and even in the dry ground we're experiencing here in central Pa I pulled an old pocket knife out from 8" down. Wow, I think I'm going to like this detector!

I posted this on another forum and got some opinions there, but I am interested in getting as many ideas or suggestions as possible. I know there is spillover in membership between here and other forums so if you've chimed in at the other place you can ignore this post. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas or suggestions. Here is my original question/statement;

I had a problem with my original V3i which required an exchange. No problems there. The replacement machine works 100x better than the first one. I'm pretty happy with the finds but I have that sneaking suspicion that I'm not seeing everything that I should. So today I decided to do a comparison and go over some previously hunted ground with three different machines. A BH 505, an ATP and of course the V3i. I ran the other machines first and noted where there was a report.

Surprisingly, ( And I mean SURPRISINGLY!) the BH actually had a solid hit and showed it to be a nickel at 4 to 6 inches. The ATP showed the same result showing 6" on the meter. The V3i unfortunately couldn't find any signal . I dug the target and was pleasantly surprised to pull pull a 1943 War Nickel (my second this year) from 5 1/2". I reburied it and repeated the test. This time the V3i had an intermittent report but the Polar Array was indicating a poor target ( I know that Polar array is limited in the depth that it is effective). What bothers me is that the V3i should be Killing a nickel at 5 to 6 inches. Yes, I ground balanced before I tested. I wasn't running an inordinately low RXG (10) and my Filter was 5Hz. I was running the tweaked C&J program that has worked for me quite well and then changed over to the stock C&J and even went so far as to try Deep Silver (also ground balancing for each mode).

I'm wondering if I have a marginal 10"dd. I suppose that the next test I should to is to rebury the coin and try my 950 and my 4x6 shooter and see if they perform any better.

I guess that I feel as though for what this machine costs, it should be the clear winner over a low end detector and a mid range one. I can see if one of my custom programs wasn't quite up to snuff, or that I had a setting incorrect, but even so, in decent dirt the V3i should be killing it. My soil VDI is -91 and the mineralization percentage is only 2%. As I said, I tried the 5Hz 7.5Hz and the 10Hz filters and none made a difference as far as actually detecting the target.

I'm baffled and really want to love this machine, It really DOES have amazing features, but I'm now getting the feeling that I'm leaving a lot in the ground when I hunt.

High Trash Program (no replies)

I just bought a used V3I off ebay and it seams to works great, However when trying to search with the high trash program all I'm getting over all targets is a small blip sound, I put a few coins on the ground and it barely picked them up. What could be wrong with this program? I should be hearing a good solid tone for these targets. I am currently using the 10 inch 2d coil. Any help would be appreciated.
